Delicate, translucent and quietly elegant, this folding fan brings the graceful beauty of Shosoin-inspired grape arabesque motifs into a soft Shirafuji palette.

Inspired by the ornamental traditions associated with Shosoin, this elegant folding fan features a delicate grape and arabesque motif embroidered across a translucent fabric surface. The flowing vines, leaves and fruit form an intricate pattern that reveals new details as the fan catches the light.

The delicate pure silk fan surface is embroidered with the Shōsōin Grape Arabesque (正倉院葡萄唐草) motif and coloured in Shirafuji (白藤色) using Hikizome (引き染め), a traditional hand-dyeing technique practised by skilled Kyoto artisans.

The flowing grapevines represent vitality and continuous growth, while the fruit they bear has long expressed wishes for fulfilment and fruition. The motif belongs to the decorative tradition associated with Shōsōin, giving the design a rich connection to Japan’s classical heritage.

With every movement, the translucent silk, delicate embroidery and softly dyed colour interact with the light, revealing the gentle beauty and lustre unique to silk.
