A little wish, and a reminder to keep going.

Inspired by one of Japan's most recognisable symbols of perseverance and good fortune, Little Wishes brings together four Daruma pieces made for everyday life — a cotton handkerchief, Mino ware yunomi, Mino ware mug and a miniature Daruma ornament.

At the heart of the set is the Red Daruma, traditionally associated with success, achievement and determination.

Make a wish or set yourself a goal, then fill in one eye of the miniature Daruma. Keep it somewhere you will see it — perhaps beside your morning cup of tea or on your desk — as a small reminder of what you are working towards. When your wish comes true or your goal is achieved, fill in the second eye to complete your Daruma.

The matching yunomi, mug and handkerchief bring the same cheerful symbol into the little routines of everyday life, turning an ancient Japanese tradition into something personal, practical and easy to enjoy.

The Set Includes

Red Daruma Mini Ornament
A colourful miniature Daruma made for the traditional eye-painting ritual. Fill in one eye when making your wish, and the other when it comes true. Red represents success and achievement and the ornament includes a bookmark explaining its meaning.

Daruma Mino Ware Yunomi
A handcrafted Japanese tea cup made in the historic Mino pottery region. Finished with a distinctive Daruma motif and subtle textured detailing, it is ideal for green tea, hojicha, genmaicha or simply a quiet everyday drink.

Red Daruma Mino Ware Mug
A hand-finished Japanese porcelain mug featuring the classic red Daruma. Made in the Mino region using a specialised water-repellent printing technique, each piece has subtle variations in glaze, colour and texture that give it its own character.

Daruma Cotton Towel Handkerchief
Made in Japan from 100% cotton, this soft and absorbent towel handkerchief features the beloved Daruma motif in a practical 23 × 23 cm size — a small piece of Japanese good fortune to carry with you throughout the day.

Make a wish. Keep going. Fill in the other eye when you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the different Daruma colours represent?

Each Daruma colour symbolises a different wish or blessing in Japanese tradition:

  • Red – Good Luck & Success
  • Pink – Love & Happiness
  • White – New Beginnings & Academic Success
  • Black – Protection & Warding Off Evil
  • Yellow – Wealth & Prosperity
  • Purple – Health & Longevity
  • Green – Growth & Good Health
Is Daruma a good gift?

Yes. Daruma-themed gifts are often given to celebrate new beginnings, graduations, career milestones, new businesses, birthdays, and New Year. As a symbol of perseverance and good fortune, Daruma makes a thoughtful gift to encourage someone as they pursue their goals.

Why is Daruma so popular in Japan?

Daruma is widely recognised as a symbol of good luck and encouragement. Its iconic design appears not only on traditional Daruma dolls but also on everyday items such as tableware, stationery, textiles, and home décor. Featuring Daruma on daily objects is a way to celebrate Japanese culture while carrying a reminder of resilience and positive thinking.

What does a Daruma symbolise?

The Daruma represents perseverance, success, and never giving up. Its rounded shape allows it to return upright when tipped over, reflecting the Japanese proverb:

"Fall down seven times, stand up eight."

For this reason, Daruma are often displayed to encourage strength, optimism, and determination when pursuing personal or professional goals.

What is a Daruma?

Daruma (達磨) is a traditional Japanese good luck charm that symbolises perseverance, determination, and achieving goals. Inspired by Bodhidharma, the Buddhist monk traditionally credited with founding Zen Buddhism, Daruma dolls have been cherished in Japan for centuries as symbols of resilience and good fortune.

Why does the Daruma have blank eyes?

Daruma dolls traditionally begin with both eyes left blank. This is intentional — the eyes are completed as part of a Japanese custom associated with setting a goal, making a wish or committing to something you hope to achieve.
