JAPANESE HINOKI WOOD BOOKMARK | MATSUMIKOUGEI
JAPANESE HINOKI WOOD BOOKMARK | MATSUMIKOUGEI
£5.80A little piece of Kyoto to keep between the pages.
Crafted from Japanese hinoki wood and decorated with delicate scenes of temples, cherry blossoms and kimono, these elegant bookmarks turn an everyday reading companion into a small celebration of Japan.
For those who still love the quiet pleasure of opening a book, a bookmark can be much more than something that simply marks a page.
Made in Japan from Japanese hinoki cypress, this collection combines the warmth and natural grain of wood with delicately illustrated scenes inspired by Kyoto.
Cherry blossoms drift around historic temples. Fine metallic details trace roofs, flowers and traditional patterns. In other designs, kimono-clad figures appear against pagodas and softly coloured Kyoto scenery. The illustrations allow the natural wood grain to remain visible beneath them, giving every design a warmth that paper or plastic bookmarks rarely achieve.
The construction is equally thoughtful. A layer of Japanese washi paper is placed between the wood to create a three-layer structure, helping the bookmark resist splitting and bending while remaining slim enough to sit comfortably between the pages of a book.
A dark cord at the top makes it easy to find your place, while the rounded corners and slender wooden form give the bookmark a simple, tactile finish.
Practical, decorative and distinctly Japanese, it is a small object made for people who still find pleasure in books — and in the beautiful things that accompany them.
