A special book for a very Japanese tradition.

A Goshuincho is an accordion-style book made for collecting Goshuin — the beautiful seals and calligraphy received when visiting shrines and temples across Japan. More than a notebook, it becomes a personal record of the places you visit and the memories you make along the way.

What is a Goshuincho?

When visiting a shrine or temple in Japan, visitors can receive a Goshuin — traditionally combining a vermilion seal with handwritten calligraphy and the date of the visit. Each one is unique to the place you visit, turning a Goshuincho into a beautiful record of a journey through Japan.

This goshuincho (御朱印帳) features a bellows-style binding, known in Japanese as Jabara (蛇腹). Unlike a conventional bound notebook, the pages are arranged in a continuous accordion-fold format that can be used page by page or unfolded. Designed in the traditional accordion-fold format, the pages open out individually for receiving Goshuin and can also be unfolded to reveal your collection as a continuous sequence.

This Mt. Fuji edition by Furukawa Shiko brings together some of Japan’s most recognisable symbols of good fortune: Mt. Fuji beneath the rising sun, cranes, sea bream, pine, plum blossom, waves and a tortoise, centred around the character 福 (Fuku) — meaning good fortune or blessing.

Why We Love It

A notebook with a purpose, and a journey behind every page.

We love the Goshuincho because it is something rarely seen outside Japan, yet it captures so much of Japanese travel and culture in one simple object.

Empty when your journey begins, it gradually becomes completely personal — every seal marking a shrine or temple visited, a place remembered, and a moment from Japan preserved on paper.

The Furukawa Shiko Fuku Mt. Fuji Goshuincho combines traditional Japanese auspicious design with a modern, casual style.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “bellows style” mean for a goshuincho?

Bellows style, known asJabara (蛇腹)in Japanese, refers to an accordion-fold construction in which the pages are connected in a continuous folded format. This allows the goshuincho to be used page by page or unfolded into a longer continuous section.

What is Yuzen washi paper?

Yuzen washi is traditional Japanese paper decorated using techniques inspired by Yuzen dyeing, a celebrated Japanese textile art. According to the manufacturer, each sheet used for this fan is carefully hand-dyed by skilled artisans, producing fine lines and subtle colour variations that cannot be replicated by machine printing.

What is a Goshuin (Red Seal)?

A Goshuin is a handwritten calligraphic inscription accompanied by a red seal, issued by Japanese shrines and temples as a record of your visit. Each Goshuin is written individually and is traditionally collected in a Goshuin Book (Goshuincho).
