Inspired by the colours and graphic designs of early 20th-century Japan, these textured washi stickers bring together nostalgic motifs, delicate florals and charming illustrations in a distinctly Japanese retro-modern style.

Japan’s Taisho era, from 1912 to 1926, was a fascinating period of changing visual culture, when traditional Japanese aesthetics increasingly met new influences from Western art and graphic design. The result was a distinctive style often associated today with Taisho Roman — nostalgic, decorative and quietly modern.

The WANOWA Retro Modern collection takes inspiration from the colours and patterns of this period.

Rather than conventional modern stickers, each sheet resembles a miniature collection of vintage labels, stamps, framed illustrations and decorative emblems. Muted greens and creams sit alongside warm reds, oranges and browns, creating the softly aged palette that gives the collection much of its character.

Three designs explore the theme in different ways: a white rabbit surrounded by strawberries and flowers; playful black cats amongst botanical motifs; and an elegant floral composition centred around Japanese camellias.

The stickers are made using textured Japanese paper, adding a tactile quality that complements their nostalgic illustrations. Their varied shapes make them particularly suited to sealing letters, decorating envelopes, journals and notebooks, or adding small accents to gift wrapping and handmade cards.
