JAPANESE SHORT INCENSE STICKS | KYOTO FRANGRANCE IN PAULOWNIA WOOD BOX – 3 SCENTS | KOUSAIDO 香彩堂
£19.50Three quiet impressions of Kyoto, presented in traditional paulownia wood.
Description
A restrained incense collection inspired by the atmosphere of Japan’s ancient capital.
Created by Kyoto incense maker Kousaido, this series translates familiar impressions of the city into fragrance — from the flowers of Gion and the freshness of a bamboo grove to the subtle sweetness of early spring plum blossom.
Each fragrance is presented as short incense sticks in a simple paulownia wood box. With little decoration beyond the Japanese calligraphy on the lid, the presentation feels deliberately understated: natural wood, fragrance and a sense of place.
Gion no Hana 祇園香 — Floral
Inspired by the flowers of Gion, one of Kyoto’s most recognisable historic districts.
A passionate floral fragrance created from a blend of several flowers, with a warm and expressive character. The incense itself has a distinctive peach-pink tone, adding a subtle touch of colour when the box is opened.
Character: Floral · Warm · Expressive
Take-kou 竹香 — Bamboo
Inspired by the stillness and crisp freshness of a bamboo grove.
Lily of the valley, cyclamen and bergamot are blended to create a fresh, green fragrance with a clean and tranquil character.
Character: Green · Fresh · Clean
Ume-kou 梅香 — Plum Blossom
Inspired by the refreshing yet gently sweet-and-sour character of early spring plum blossom.
Lilac, clove and other notes create a subdued fragrance recalling an old plum tree — softer and quieter than a straightforward floral perfume.
Character: Floral · Subtle · Gently Spiced
Why We Chose It
We chose this collection for its restraint.
There is almost nothing decorative about the packaging: unfinished-looking paulownia wood, black Japanese characters and a simple sliding lid. Yet that simplicity gives the collection much of its character.
Rather than presenting Kyoto through obvious landmarks, the three fragrances evoke quieter impressions of the city — flowers in Gion, bamboo groves and plum blossom at the beginning of spring.
Compact, easy to use and beautifully understated, these are particularly suited to someone looking for Japanese incense that feels traditional without being ceremonial or overly elaborate.
Summary
A quietly elegant Kyoto incense collection, pairing three evocative fragrances with traditional paulownia wood boxes and an exceptionally restrained Japanese presentation.
