SHIKI KAORU | FOUR SEASONS JAPANESE INCENSE | KOUSAIDO 香彩堂
£198.00Four seasons. Four fragrances. One moon passing quietly through the Japanese year.
A refined incense collection inspired by classical Japanese poetry, the changing seasons and the waxing and waning of the moon.
Description
Fragrance shaped by the Japanese seasons
Shiki Kaoru draws its inspiration from Hyakunin Isshu, the celebrated anthology of one hundred classical Japanese poems.
Across these poems run recurring images of the seasons, the night sky and the moon — images that have shaped Japanese ideas of beauty for centuries.
Kousaido translates this world into four distinctive fragrances, each representing a different season and a different expression of moonlight.
Presented in four restrained black packages within a pale wooden box, the collection feels deliberately quiet. There is little ornamentation; instead, the natural grain of the wood, charcoal-grey interior and fine gold detailing create an understated sense of ceremony.
Four Seasons, Four Fragrances
Spring — Hana no Tsukigokoro-kō | Ryūzenkō (Ambergris)
Deep and softly sweet, inspired by hazy moonlight on a spring night. Its imagery comes from Abe no Nakamaro's famous poem looking toward the moon over Mount Mikasa in Kasuga.
Summer — Yoizuki no Kimi | Kyara
The most precious fragrance in the collection. A refined Kyara aroma evokes cool moonlight illuminating a short summer night.
Autumn — Mangetsu no Komorebi | Jinkō (Agarwood)
Deep yet clear, with the translucent character of agarwood. Inspired by moonlight emerging through breaks in drifting autumn clouds.
Winter — Tsukiwasure | Byakudan (Sandalwood)
Calm, dignified and gently warm. Sandalwood evokes moonlight resting quietly in a clear and lonely winter sky.
Why We Chose It
This is incense as a cultural object, not simply a home fragrance.
What attracted us to Shiki Kaoru is the completeness of its idea. Classical poetry, the four seasons, moonlight and traditional Japanese fragrance materials are brought together without making the presentation elaborate or decorative.
Even the packaging follows this restraint. The pale wooden box reveals four almost monochrome inner packages, interrupted only by delicate gold lines and handwritten-style Japanese characters.
It is an unusually quiet form of luxury.
For someone already familiar with Japanese incense, the inclusion of Kyara, Jinkō and Byakudan gives the collection considerably more depth than a conventional fragrance assortment. For someone discovering Japanese incense for the first time, it offers another way in — through poetry, seasonality and the Japanese appreciation of transient moments.
This is a set we would particularly recommend as a meaningful gift, or for someone who wants to explore Japanese incense beyond everyday floral and botanical fragrances.
