True artisan lacquerware cannot be rushed. It defies the frantic pace of modern manufacturing, requiring a level of patience that borders on the meditative. The creation of a single handcrafted trinket box can take anywhere from several months to over a year to complete. The process begins with the base, usually carved from slow-growing Japanese woods like cypress, chestnut, or katsura. This wooden core must be perfectly seasoned and dried to ensure it will never warp or split, providing a stable foundation for the urushi.
Once the base is ready, the base-coating phase begins. The artisan applies a mixture of raw lacquer, clay powder, and rice paste to seal the wood and reinforce the edges. This is followed by the core layers of lacquer. Coat after coat is applied using specialized brushes made from human hair, which leave no texture behind. Crucially, each layer must cure in a specialized humid, dust-free cabinet called a furo. Because urushi requires a relative humidity of around 70% to set, the drying process is slow and entirely dependent on the artisan's intuition.
Between every single coat, the surface is meticulously wet-sanded using fine charcoal or whetstones. This abrasive process smooths out any microscopic bumps, ensuring that the next layer adheres perfectly. For a top-tier piece of Kyoto craft, this cycle of painting, curing, and polishing is repeated thirty to forty times. It is this obsessive, multi-layered dedication that creates the depth of colour and the entirely flawless lacquer finish that defines the Kumohana collection. When you look closely, you see only pure, unblemished perfection.
