Using proprietary blends of fine porcelain stone and stoneware clay, artisans achieve a material that balances smooth plasticity with thermal durability. Master throwers shape each piece individually on the potter's wheel (*Rokuro*). Unlike uniform factory moulds, hand-thrown ceramics possess subtle variations in weight and rim curvature that fit naturally into the human hand—a quality Japanese masters refer to as *Te-sukurai* (hand-comfort).
The Art of Dimensional Relief: Icchin and Carving
One of Tousengama's signature technical achievements is its mastery of surface relief. Artisans utilize a traditional slip-trailing method called Icchin. Using a delicate funnel-like squeeze tool, the craftsman applies liquid clay pigment in raised, fluid lines across the unfired body. This creates subtle, tactile borders that delineate painted motifs—such as cherry blossom petals or flowing water—giving the ceramic a striking three-dimensional quality.
In addition to Icchin, Tousengama craftsmen employ delicate carving (*Chokoku*) and fluting (*Shinogi*) on the damp clay. These carved grooves capture light and allow glazes to pool evenly, creating rich tonal gradations across the surface.
Precision Firing Discipline
Once formed and detailed, the raw pieces undergo an initial low-temperature biscuit firing (*Bisque* at approx. 800°C) to make the clay porous yet handleable. It is on this porous biscuit surface that master painters paint freehand using natural mineral pigments. After painting, the piece is dipped into Tousengama’s proprietary clear glaze and subjected to a high-temperature firing exceeding 1200°C.
This rigorous process demands absolute precision; a minor temperature fluctuation or an uneven glaze application can ruin days of work.
