Celebrate the beauty of Japan's literary and artistic heritage with this Handmade Japanese The Tale of Genji Chopstick Rest Set, expertly crafted by Tousen Kiln in Kyoto, Japan. Inspired by The Tale of Genji, the world's oldest novel and one of Japan's greatest literary masterpieces, each handcrafted chopstick rest features a unique illustration representing scenes, seasonal motifs and cultural symbols associated with this timeless classic. Every piece showcases the refined artistry of authentic Kiyomizu Ware (Kyo-yaki).

Founded in the early Meiji era, Tousen Kiln began as a Kiyomizu ware wholesaler before establishing its own kiln to create handcrafted ceramics. Using the traditional clay and glazes of Kyoto's Kiyomizu ware, each piece reflects generations of Japanese ceramic craftsmanship while preserving the elegance and cultural heritage of Kyoto.

Designed to keep chopsticks clean and neatly placed between courses, these ceramic chopstick rests add a refined finishing touch to everyday meals as well as formal dining occasions. Beautifully presented in a traditional wooden gift box decorated with artwork inspired by The Tale of Genji, this six-piece set makes a meaningful gift for admirers of Japanese literature, culture and handcrafted ceramics.

Each chopstick rest is individually handcrafted and hand-finished, resulting in subtle variations in glaze, colour and decoration that celebrate the authentic beauty of Japanese pottery.

What is a Hashioki (chopstick rest)?

A hashioki is a traditional Japanese chopstick rest used to keep chopsticks clean and off the table between bites. Although small in size, it reflects the Japanese appreciation for thoughtful dining, cleanliness, and attention to detail.

Do chopstick rests have cultural significance?

Yes. In Japan, thoughtful table presentation is an important part of the dining experience.
